Introduction:
The FIFA World Cup (WC) tournament, which takes place every four years has the objective of nurturing diversity, promoting peaceful co-existence among nations as well as celebrating multilateralism of the global community. Similarly, the 2026 FIFA WC which spanned between 11th June -19th July 2026, and jointly hosted by three countries – Canada, United States of America (USA) and Mexico – brought lots of fun, friendships, celebrations of cultural/traditional arts, dancing, chanting and drumming in manifestation of one spirit enveloping this universal sports. This incident reflects the pervasiveness of geopolitical strategy in the province of world football governance. While some politicians from the global south regard the FIFA World Cup as an opportunity to enrich their selfish and corrupt appetites, leaders of the developed world consider it as an avenue to promote the interests and wellbeing of their respective states. A contrast view of purpose and strategic thinking oscillating between the two hemispheres. Besides adverse criticisms characterising the tournament, African teams such as Senegal, Ghana, Morrocco, Egypt and Congo among others, displayed weak mindedness and abysmal performances during games they could have won outright victory. These poor performances manifested a mindset bereft of determination to win critical matches, especially at the knock-out stages.
The Mindset of the African Footballer
The performances of Ghana, Senegal, Morrocco and Egypt at the knock-out stages, which culminated in losses to their European and South American counterparts shockingly revealed a weak-minded attitude devoid of professional footballers determining to win critical games. Unlike their European and South American teams who played with stamina, valour and patriotic spirit in fighting aggressively till the final whistle, the above-mentioned African football teams showed lukewarm and poor technical skills to win easy games; while their coaching staff looked on helplessly as exemplified during the Senegal – Belgium, Egypt – Argentina and Ghana -Columbia matches. These are classical examples of poor judgment on the part of the playing and technical teams which affirm weak mindedness to an extent. Strangely, most of the African teams have professional players plying their trade in elite European Clubs and have distinguished themselves as accomplished footballers, thereby making such poor performances harder to accept.
Final Remarks
The 2026 FIFA WC hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico was a successful event in the history of world football. The FFA is expected to rake in the largest financial rewards with the host nations gaining global recognition to attract tourists to boost their socioeconomic fortunes coupled with numerous benefits to follow later. Developing states, especially Cape Verde accounted for themselves so courageously while new talents were revealed as previous tournaments did. However, the performances of those key African soccer nations mentioned above revealed a weak-mindset to achieve critical results at the global stage. The earlier this challenge is addressed the better it will promote the continent’s profile among the elite football continents to earn its rightful respect.
